Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arthur Allen Lumsdaine (1913–1989) was an American psychologist. He studied how people learn using different types of media and special teaching methods called "programmed learning."

Art Lumsdaine was a soldier in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he went to Stanford University and earned his PhD (a high-level degree) in psychology in 1949.

His time in the Army showed him how important good training was for soldiers. This made him focus on how well different media could help people learn and get trained. He also studied how people's attitudes could change through experiments.

He was a key person among psychologists after World War II who worked on better ways to educate and train people. Lumsdaine saw how useful "teaching machines" and "programmed instruction" could be, and he helped develop them.

Art was a member of important groups like the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychological Association (APA). He also served on the APA's Board of Scientific Affairs and was President of the Division of Educational Psychology. For eight years, he was an editor for a magazine called Contemporary Psychology.
