Arthur Addison facts for kids
Arthur Richman Addison (born May 17, 1842 – died July 29, 1915) was an important Australian politician. He was also a successful businessman and enjoyed sports.
His Early Life and Work
Arthur was born in Adelaide, Australia, on May 17, 1842. His parents, Thomas and Eliza Addison, arrived in South Australia in 1838. His father, Thomas, worked for the government for many years, helping to collect taxes on goods brought into the country.
Arthur went to school at St. Peter's College. After finishing school, he started working for a company that ran boats on the River Murray. He then worked for the National Bank for three years. After that, he spent four years with the Bank of South Australia. During this time, he even managed the bank's branch in Port Elliot.
Starting His Own Businesses
Next, Arthur went into business with William Bowman. They started a flour milling business in Middleton. This means they ground grain into flour. Their business was very successful!
Later, Arthur moved to Orroroo. There, he started another milling business with Edward Trussell. He stayed involved with this business for the rest of his life.
Other Interests and Hobbies
Arthur was an active member of the Church of England. In Orroroo, he often led church services as a lay reader, which means he helped with religious duties without being a priest.
He loved sports and was a member of Tattersall's Club. He owned several racehorses. One of his horses, named Vistula, won two big races: the ARC Grand National Hurdles in 1891 and the Great Eastern Steeplechase in 1892.
Arthur was also very interested in the Volunteer Militia, which was a group of citizens who trained like soldiers. He became a Captain in the Orroroo Volunteer Force. Later, he led the Orroroo Defence Rifle Club and won many awards for his excellent shooting skills.
His Family
Arthur Addison was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Bowman, who passed away on January 12, 1889. She was the daughter of his business partner, William Bowman. They married on May 12, 1870, and had nine children together.
After Elizabeth's death, Arthur married Adelaide Williams in 1893.
One of his sons, Walter C. Addison (who died in 1951), was also a champion target rifle shooter from Orroroo. Walter married Gertrude Madeleine Woods on May 8, 1900. Their son, Gerald Bowman Addison (who died in 1994), was also a well-known marksman, just like his father and grandfather.
