Arthur Rumbold was born on September 25, 1820. His father was Sir William Rumbold, 3rd Baronet. Arthur also had an older brother, Sir Cavendish Stuart Rumbold.
Family Life
Arthur Rumbold was married two times. His first marriage was to Antoinette de Kerven in January 1846. She passed away in October 1867 on the island of Tortola. A major hurricane hit the area shortly after her death. Later, in August 1868, he married Helen Eliza Hopewell.
His Education
Arthur Rumbold studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. This is a famous military academy in the United Kingdom where army officers are trained.
Arthur Rumbold's Career
Arthur Rumbold had an interesting career that involved both military service and working in government.
Early Military Service
He joined the army when he was 17 years old, in 1837. He first served in places like New South Wales and Tasmania, which are now parts of Australia. He was with a group called the 51st Foot.
Later, he moved to another group, the 21st Fusiliers. With them, he served in Bengal (in India), Mauritius, and the Cape of Good Hope (in South Africa). In 1844, he joined the 1st West India Regiment. However, he left the army in 1846.
Working in Jamaica
After leaving the army, Arthur Rumbold became a stipendiary magistrate in Jamaica. A stipendiary magistrate was like a judge who was paid a salary by the government. He held this job until 1855.
The Crimean War
He then served as a brigade major during the Crimean War. This was a big war that took place from 1853 to 1856. He was also given the rank of Colonel in the Ottoman Army. For his service, he received an award called the Order of the Medjidie.
Diplomatic Roles in the West Indies
After the war, Arthur Rumbold returned to the West Indies. This is where he started his career in diplomacy, which means representing his country in other places.
- In 1857, he became the President of Nevis. The President was the main government leader of the island.
- In 1865, he became the President of the British Virgin Islands.
- From January to April 1867, he also served as the Administrator for Anguilla and St Kitts. An Administrator is another type of government leader.
His Passing
Sir Arthur Carlos Henry Rumbold passed away on June 12, 1869. After his death, his title, called a baronetcy, went to his son, Sir Arthur Victor Raoul Anduze Rumbold. However, his son was still a child and died a few years later. The baronetcy then passed to Arthur's brother, Sir Charles Hale Rumbold.
