Arthur Gardner: A Life in Film

Early Years and Acting Beginnings

Arthur Gardner was born in Marinette, Wisconsin. He grew up in a family that valued hard work and education. When he was 18 years old, Arthur began his career in show business as an actor.

In 1929, he moved to Hollywood, California. There, he started working for Universal film studio. His first jobs were as an "extra," which means he appeared in the background of movies. One of his earliest roles was as a student in the 1930 film All Quiet on the Western Front. He was the very last person from that film's cast and crew to pass away.

Arthur Gardner also appeared with actress Luise Rainer in the 1938 movie Dramatic School. Both Arthur and Luise lived to be 104 years old. They were the last two surviving members of that film's cast.

From Actor to Producer

During World War II, Arthur Gardner served in the Army Air Forces. He was part of the First Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. This special unit made training films and documentaries for the military.

At this time, Arthur changed his last name from Goldberg to Gardner. Many actors with Jewish backgrounds changed their names then. This was done to avoid difficulties that some people faced at the time. While serving, he met two other talented individuals, Jules Levy and Arnold Laven.

In 1951, these three friends decided to start their own company. They called it Levy-Gardner-Laven. This company produced many successful films and television shows.

Famous TV Shows and Movies

Arthur Gardner became a very successful producer. He helped create popular TV series like The Rifleman, which aired from 1958 to 1963. He also produced The Big Valley, a Western series that ran from 1965 to 1969.
