Who Was Arthur Hill?

Arthur Hill was born in Cork, Ireland. His birthday was June 8, 1846. He came from a family of famous architects. His father, Henry Hill, was an architect. His uncle, William Hill, was also an architect. Many of his relatives were architects too. This included his cousins and his own son, Henry Houghton Hill. Later in life, Arthur Hill became the grandfather of a famous chef. Her name was Myrtle Allen. She earned a special award called a Michelin star.

Arthur's Education

Arthur studied art in Cork. He went to the Cork School of Art. He finished his studies there in 1865. After that, he moved to London, England. In London, he studied architecture. He attended the West London School of Art. Around 1869, he came back to Cork. He then joined his father's architecture business.

His Home

Arthur Hill designed his own house. He built it in 1903. The house was called Redgarth. It was located on the Douglas Road in Cork. He lived there until he passed away. Arthur Hill died on February 24, 1921.

Arthur Hill was very interested in a special building style. This style was called Celtic-Romanesque. It mixed old Irish designs with Roman building ideas. He used this style in many of his projects.
