Arthur Hutt VC (12 February 1889 – 14 April 1954) was a very brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest and most important award for courage in battle. This special medal is given to soldiers from the British and Commonwealth forces. Arthur Hutt was also the first person born in Coventry to ever receive the Victoria Cross.
A Heroic Act
Arthur Hutt was 28 years old during the First World War. He was a private in the 1/7th Battalion of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the British Army. He showed incredible bravery on 4 October 1917, during the battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.
- At a place called Terrier Farm, all the officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in his platoon were injured.
- Private Hutt immediately took charge and led his group forward.
- They were stopped by a strong enemy position.
- Without hesitation, Arthur Hutt ran forward alone.
- He bravely shot the enemy officer and three other soldiers in the post.
- Because of his actions, between 40 and 50 other enemy soldiers surrendered.
- Later, his group had pushed too far ahead.
- He carefully led his party back, protecting them by shooting at the enemy.
- He then carried a wounded soldier to safety.
- After making sure his position was secure, he went out again.
- Under heavy enemy fire, he carried four more wounded soldiers to safety.
Remembering a Hero
Arthur Hutt later became a corporal. His bravery is remembered with a special memorial made of Cornish granite. This memorial is located in the War Memorial Park, Coventry.

On Wednesday, 4 October 2017, a special paving stone was laid for Corporal Arthur Hutt. This ceremony took place at the War Memorial Park in Coventry. It was a way to honor his amazing courage and remember his actions during the war.
