Arthur Lee Washington Jr. was born on November 30, 1949. He became a person wanted by the police after an event on April 12, 1989. He was once part of a group called the Black Liberation Army. The police wanted him because of a serious incident involving a New Jersey state trooper.
On October 18, 1989, Washington was added to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's special list of the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. He stayed on this list for more than ten years. What Happened to Arthur Lee Washington Jr.?
On April 12, 1989, a New Jersey state trooper named Michael J. Clayton stopped a car. The car was a 1979 Ford Thunderbird, and it had an expired inspection sticker. Arthur Lee Washington Jr. was a passenger in this car.
The Incident with the Trooper
When the car was stopped, Washington got out and started to walk away. Trooper Clayton told him to stop, but Washington did not listen. As the trooper began to follow him, Washington pulled out a handgun. He started to fire shots at Trooper Clayton. The trooper also fired back. During this exchange, no one was hurt. While Trooper Clayton paused to reload his weapon, Washington managed to get away on foot.
On the Run: A Wanted Person
After the incident, police searched Washington's apartment in Asbury Park, New Jersey. They found other items there. A few days later, on April 14, a special order was issued for Washington's arrest. This order meant he was wanted for running away from the law and for the serious incident with the trooper.
Joining the FBI's Most Wanted List
The FBI added Arthur Lee Washington Jr. to their Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on October 18, 1989. He was the 427th person to be placed on this important list. He remained on the list for over eleven years. On December 27, 2000, he was taken off the list. This happened because he no longer met the specific rules for being on it.
