Arthur Pomeroy was born in Cork, Ireland, on January 16, 1723. He was the oldest son of Reverend John Pomeroy. His father was an Archdeacon, which is a senior church official. His mother was Elizabeth Donnellan from Cloghan, County Roscommon.

A Career in Politics

Arthur Pomeroy became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a representative in the government. He represented County Kildare from 1761.

Later, in 1783, he was given a special title and became a Baron Harberton. This meant he moved to the Irish House of Lords, which was another part of the government. In 1791, he received an even higher title, becoming Viscount Harberton. These titles were part of the Peerage of Ireland, a system of noble ranks.

Family Life

Arthur Pomeroy married Mary Colley. Her father, Henry Colley, was a relative of the famous 1st Duke of Wellington.

Arthur and Mary had seven children:

  • Henry, who became the 2nd Viscount Harberton.
  • Arthur, who became the 3rd Viscount Harberton.
  • John, who became the 4th Viscount Harberton.
  • Mary, who married Sir John Craven Carden, 1st Baronet.
  • Henrietta, who married James Hewitt, 2nd Viscount Lifford. Sadly, she passed away after only two years of marriage.
  • George, who died unmarried.
  • Elizabeth, who also died unmarried.

Arthur Pomeroy was also an ancestor of General George Colley, a military leader born in 1835.
