Arthur Cecil Rolleston (born 13 December 1867 – died 28 September 1918) was a New Zealander who worked as a lawyer and played cricket. He played two important cricket matches for the Canterbury team in 1890 and 1891.

Life and Career

Arthur Rolleston was the son of William Rolleston, an important New Zealand politician. His grandfather, Joseph Brittan, was also one of the early settlers in Christchurch.

Arthur went to school in Christchurch at Christ's College from 1878 to 1886. He then studied at Canterbury College. In 1884, he won a special scholarship called the Somes Scholar award.

He became a lawyer, first as a solicitor in 1891, and then as a barrister in 1900. These are both types of lawyers who help people with legal matters.

On 14 August 1899, Arthur married Ruby Mildred Buckley in Christchurch. She was the youngest daughter of another politician, George Buckley.

Cricket Playing Days

Newspapers at the time described Arthur Rolleston as a "very dashing left-handed bat" in cricket. However, his cricket career was quite short. In his two main matches, he scored a total of 16 runs.

Even so, in his second match, he scored 9 runs and was "not out." This means he was still batting when his team's turn to bat ended. His score was the highest in Canterbury's first turn at batting, when they scored 50 runs.

Later Life and Passing

Arthur Rolleston worked as a lawyer for most of his life. He worked mainly in Christchurch, but also spent some time working in the Chatham Islands.

He passed away at the age of 50 while visiting Wellington. At the time, his wife was living in England.
