Arthur Ross (musician) facts for kids
Arthur Ross (February 28, 1949 – May 30, 1996) was an American singer and songwriter. He was best known for working with Leon Ware. Arthur was also the younger brother of famous singer Diana Ross.
Early Life and Music Career
Arthur Ross was born in Detroit, Michigan. While his older sister, Diana Ross, became famous with The Supremes in the 1960s, Arthur also found his path in music.
In 1972, after Diana Ross started her solo career, she helped Arthur join Motown as a songwriter. He teamed up with songwriter Leon Ware. Together, they wrote popular songs for many artists. These included Michael Jackson, The Miracles, and Marvin Gaye. Some of their well-known songs were "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and "I Want You". "I Wanna Be Where You Are" even reached the top 20 on the music charts.
Later, Arthur Ross decided to become a singer himself. He released his first album, Changes, in 1979 with Motown Records. Even though talented artists like jazz pianist Joe Sample played on the album, it sold about 12,000 copies. Arthur felt disappointed with the music business. He stopped making music in the early 1980s and moved back to Detroit.
Legacy in Music
Even after his passing, Arthur Ross's songs continue to be popular. Many artists have performed "I Want You". These include Robert Palmer, Madonna, and Michael McDonald. His sister, Diana Ross, also covered the song on her 2007 album, I Love You.
His album, Changes, was finally released on CD in August 2012. The album starts with "I Want You". It ends with another song he wrote called "To The Baby". He wrote this song for his sister Diana. It was a special tribute to her first two daughters, Rhonda Ross Kendrick and Tracee Ellis Ross.
