Brigadier Arthur Valerian Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington was an important British soldier and nobleman. He was born on July 2, 1915, in Rome, Italy. He passed away on December 31, 2014, at the age of 99. He lived at Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire, England.
He was known by different names throughout his life. From 1943 to 1972, he was called the Marquess of Douro. After 1972, he became the Duke of Wellington.

The Life of the Duke of Wellington
Arthur Valerian Wellesley went to Eton College, a famous school, and then studied at New College, Oxford University.
He was a member of the House of Lords from 1972 until 1999. The House of Lords is part of the British Parliament, where important people help make laws. He lost his seat in 1999 because of a new law.
A Distinguished Military Career
The Duke of Wellington had a long and brave career in the British Army. He served from 1936 to 1968. His highest rank was Brigadier, which is a senior officer.
He fought in the Second World War. He was part of the North African Campaign, an important series of battles in North Africa. He also commanded the 22nd Armoured Brigade, a large military unit.
For his service, he received several important awards:
- The Military Cross, given for bravery in battle.
- He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
- He was also a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order.
