Artistic swimming is a beautiful sport that combines swimming, dance, and gymnastics. Athletes perform routines in the water, moving together in sync with music. It used to be called synchronized swimming.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, artistic swimming competitions took place from August 5 to 10. They were held at the Paris Aquatic Centre. This time, fewer than 100 athletes competed, with 96 participants in total. There were two main events: the women's duet and the mixed team event.
For the Paris 2024 Games, some big changes were made to artistic swimming. These changes aimed to make the sport more equal for everyone and include more countries. In 2022, the sport's governing body, World Aquatics, voted to allow men to compete in the team event. A team could have up to two male members. However, no men were chosen to compete in the 2024 Olympics.
This was also a special Olympics because, for the first time since 2000, a country other than Russia won a gold medal in artistic swimming. Russia was not allowed to compete in these Olympics.

How Athletes Qualified
To get a spot in the Olympics, teams and duets had to qualify. For the team event, the best team from each of the five major regions (like Asia, Africa, etc.) earned a spot. The host country, France, automatically got a spot for Europe. The remaining five spots were decided at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
For the duet event, the top duet from each of the five regions that did not already have a qualified team got a spot. The last three spots were also decided at the 2024 World Championships. All ten countries that qualified for the team event also had to choose two members to form a duet.
