Asa Hutchinson is a politician from Arkansas. He was the 46th Governor of Arkansas from 2015 to 2023. In 2023, he started his campaign to become the President of the United States.

He first shared his plans to run for president on April 2, 2023. His official campaign launch was on April 26, 2023. Hutchinson believes it is important for many different voices to be heard in politics. He has often spoken about his disagreements with former President Donald Trump. He felt that some of Trump's ideas were not good for the Republican Party.

Campaign Journey

Presidential Debates

Presidential debates are important events where candidates discuss their ideas. Asa Hutchinson did not meet the requirements to join the second Republican debate. To qualify, candidates needed to have at least three percent support in several polls.

Even though he did not qualify, Hutchinson said he would not stop his campaign. He set a goal to reach four percent support in polls by Thanksgiving. If he did not reach this goal, he planned to leave the race.

Instead of debating, Hutchinson held a press conference. He compared missing the debate to a "bye week" in the NFL. He used this time to explain his plans. He wants to create more manufacturing jobs in the U.S. He also aims to make the country more independent in its energy supply.

Political Beliefs

Views on Donald Trump

Asa Hutchinson has often disagreed with former President Donald Trump. He believes that Republicans who tried to change the results of the 2020 election should not be leaders. He also said that Trump's ideas about the election were "a recipe for disaster."

In 2022, Hutchinson and Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke out against a decision by the Republican National Committee. This decision criticized two representatives, Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney. They were criticized for helping investigate the January 6 United States Capitol attack. Hutchinson supported their efforts to look into the events of January 6.

After Donald Trump faced legal issues in June 2023, Hutchinson asked him to stop his presidential campaign.

Helping Others (Medicaid)

When he was governor, Hutchinson made changes to the Medicaid program in Arkansas. Medicaid helps people with low incomes get health insurance. He added a rule that some people needed to work to get Medicaid benefits. Because of this rule, almost 17,000 people in Arkansas lost their health insurance in 2018. They could apply again the next year.

COVID-19 and Health Rules

In August 2021, Hutchinson signed laws about COVID-19 vaccinations. These laws stopped businesses and government places from asking for proof of vaccination. He also signed a law that prevented state and local officials from making people wear masks. Later, he said he wished he had not signed the mask mandate law.

In December 2021, Hutchinson praised President Joe Biden's actions on COVID-19. He thanked Biden for helping to get vaccines out. He also thanked him for making the federal response less political. However, in January 2022, Hutchinson told large businesses not to follow the Biden administration's vaccine rules.
