Asaad Kelada, born on May 11, 1940, is an Egyptian-American television director. He is well-known for directing many popular American TV shows, especially funny ones called sitcoms.
Early Life and Education
Asaad Kelada was born in Cairo, Egypt. He studied drama at the American University in Cairo. There, he learned from a famous director named Youssef Chahine. In 1961, he moved to the United States. He continued his studies, learning about directing at the Yale School of Drama.
Career in Television
Before working in TV, Asaad Kelada directed plays for the stage. He also taught drama during the 1960s and 1970s. His first chance to direct for television came in 1976. This was for an episode of the sitcom Rhoda.
Since then, he has directed episodes for many famous sitcoms. These include Benson, WKRP in Cincinnati, and The Facts of Life. He also directed Family Ties and Who's the Boss?. For Who's the Boss?, he directed 117 episodes. He was also a producer for 51 episodes of that show.
Kelada once shared his thoughts on directing comedy. He told DGA Magazine that choosing the right actors is very important. He said, "you cannot make the actor be funny." He explained that drama is about understanding things deeply. But comedy is more about technical skills. It's about getting the right rhythm, timing, speed, and energy.
