Ashikaga Yoshihide (足利 義栄, 1538 – October 28, 1568) was a very important leader in Japan. He was the 14th shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. A shōgun was like a military ruler who held real power in Japan for many years. Yoshihide was shōgun for only a short time in 1568. This was during a period called the Muromachi period.
When he became shōgun, he changed his name to Yoshinaga. However, people today usually remember him as Yoshihide. He became the Sei-i Taishōgun three years after his cousin, Ashikaga Yoshiteru, who was the 13th shōgun, passed away.
Who Was Ashikaga Yoshihide?
Ashikaga Yoshihide became the 14th shōgun in 1568. Sadly, he died from a sickness very soon after taking on this important role.
In the same month that Yoshihide died, a powerful general named Oda Nobunaga marched his armies into Kyoto. Kyoto was the capital city of Japan at that time. Nobunaga took control of the capital. He then made Ashikaga Yoshiaki the 15th shōgun.
