Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda, born on September 18, 1989, is a famous Indian badminton player. She plays for her country in both women's doubles and mixed doubles events. Ashwini is well-known for her strong partnership with fellow player Jwala Gutta. Together, they have won many important medals in international badminton tournaments.
Early Life
Ashwini Ponnappa was born in Bangalore, India. She went to school at St. Francis Xavier Girls High School in Bangalore and St. Mary's College in Hyderabad. Her father played hockey for India, but Ashwini chose badminton. She started training in badminton at a young age.
Career Highlights
Ashwini Ponnappa began her winning streak early. In 2001, she won her first national title in the sub-junior girls' doubles. She continued to win national titles in 2005 (sub-junior girls' doubles) and in 2006 and 2007 (junior girls' doubles).
In 2010, Ashwini won two gold medals at the South Asian Games. She won in mixed doubles and also in the team events. Later that year, she achieved a huge milestone at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Partnering with Jwala Gutta, she won the gold medal in the Women's Doubles event. This was India's first gold medal ever in this event at the Commonwealth Games. Ashwini and Jwala became very popular after this win.
In 2011, Ashwini and Jwala made history again. They became the first Indian pair to win a medal at the BWF World Championships. They won a bronze medal in the women's doubles event in London. This was a very proud moment for Indian badminton.
Ashwini also played in the 2012 London Olympics with Jwala Gutta. They won some matches but narrowly missed out on reaching the quarterfinals. After the Olympics, Jwala took a short break. Ashwini then played with Pradnya Gadre for a while in 2013 before reuniting with Jwala later that year.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Ashwini and Jwala won a silver medal in women's doubles. They continued their success in 2015 by winning the Canada Open women's doubles title. They beat a strong Dutch team in the final.
Ashwini competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics with Jwala Gutta, but they did not advance past the group stage. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Ashwini was part of the Indian team that won gold in the mixed team event. She also won a bronze medal in women's doubles with her new partner, N. Sikki Reddy.
More recently, Ashwini has continued to achieve success. In 2023, she won the Abu Dhabi Masters and Guwahati Masters in women's doubles with her partner Tanisha Crasto. They also won the Guwahati Masters again in 2024.
