Asim Mohamood Butt (born October 24, 1967 – died November 30, 2009) was a talented cricketer from Pakistan. He was known for his fast left-arm bowling and strong batting. Asim played five One Day International (ODI) matches for Scotland, all during the 1999 Cricket World Cup. He was a key player who helped Scotland in many important games.

Asim Butt's Cricket Journey

Asim Butt had an interesting career in cricket, playing for different teams and showing his skills as both a bowler and a batsman.

Starting Young in Pakistan

Asim began his professional cricket journey in October 1983. He played his first first-class cricket match in the 1983–84 Patron's Trophy. In this game, he scored 40 runs without being out and took one wicket. Most of his early career in Pakistan involved one-day games. He once took five wickets for 53 runs in a single innings during the 1984–85 Patron's Trophy. This was a great achievement for a bowler.

Playing for Scotland

In 1998, Asim started playing for Scotland. His first game for Scotland was in the Benson & Hedges Cup against Yorkshire. He was named "Man of the Match" in this game because he took three wickets for 42 runs. Even though Yorkshire won, Asim's performance was outstanding.

He also played in the 1998 Triple Crown Tournament for Scotland. In a match against Ireland, he bowled very well, giving away only 14 runs and taking one wicket in 10 overs. Asim continued to play for Scotland in the 2001 ICC Trophy. Here, he had an amazing game against Fiji, taking five wickets for only 11 runs. He also scored the most runs for Scotland in their win against the UAE.

Key Contributions and Challenges

Asim missed Scotland's first season in the English National League in 2003. However, he returned in 2004 and continued to perform well. He took 11 wickets that season. He also played three first-class matches in the 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup. In this tournament, Asim was Scotland's best wicket-taker, with 16 wickets. This included another five-wicket haul against Ireland, where he took nine wickets in total during the match.

Asim's excellent bowling helped Scotland reach the semi-finals of the Intercontinental Cup. In the final against Canada, he took the first four wickets in the second innings. Scotland won this final match by a large margin, thanks in part to Asim's efforts.

In 2005, Asim played three matches for Scotland. After one match, he faced a temporary ban from playing cricket for a year.

Later Life

Asim Butt sadly passed away in his sleep on November 30, 2009, in Lahore, Pakistan. He was 42 years old.
