Starting His Business Career
Asim Ghosh began his career in 1971. He worked for Procter & Gamble in Canada. In 1980, he joined Rothmans International. He later became a Senior Vice President. This was at Carling O'Keefe. It was one of Canada's largest breweries.
Leading Pepsi and AS Watson
In 1989, Mr. Ghosh became a co-CEO of Pepsi Foods (India). His job was to start Pepsi's food business in India. In 1991, he moved to Hong Kong. There, he helped set up a joint company. This company was between Pepsi and Hutchison Whampoa. Soon after, he became the CEO of AS Watson Industries. This company was part of Hutchison Whampoa. He held this role from 1991 to 1998.
Growing Mobile Phones in India
In 1998, Mr. Ghosh took on a new challenge. He led Hutchison Whampoa's phone company in India. He was the Managing Director and CEO of Hutchison Essar Ltd. He stayed in this job until 2009.
During his time, the company grew a lot. It started in just one city. It became India's second-largest mobile phone provider. It had over 63 million customers! In 2007, he oversaw a big sale. Hutchison Whampoa sold its part of the company to Vodafone. This deal was worth about $19 billion. It was the biggest company takeover in India's history at that time. It was also the largest all-cash deal in Asia up to 2007.
Leading Husky Energy
In June 2010, Mr. Ghosh became President and CEO of Husky Energy. He retired from this role in December 2016. He continued to serve on Husky's Board of Directors. He stayed on the board until December 2020. That's when Husky merged with Cenovus.
While at Husky, he led two huge projects. These were the Liwan Gas Project in China. The other was the Sunrise Energy Project in Alberta, Canada. This project was in the oil sands near Fort McMurray. He also helped Husky improve how it produced heavy oil. They used new thermal technology. Heavy oil production grew a lot under his leadership. It went from about 18,000 barrels per day in 2010 to about 80,000 barrels per day by the end of 2016.
In April 2019, he joined the board of Hutchison Drei Austria. This is a phone company. He also serves on the boards of seven companies in the UK.
Asim Ghosh's Other Roles
Mr. Ghosh has been part of many important groups. He was a member of the board of the Business Council of Canada. He also chaired the National Telecom Committee. This was for the Confederation of Indian Industry. He was also chairman of the Cellular Operators Association of India. He is recognized as a distinguished former student of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He also served on the board of governors for the Banff Centre. And he was a director for the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation.

Asim Ghosh's father was Padma Shri Amalananda Ghosh. He was a famous Indian archaeologist. He was the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1953 to 1968. Asim Ghosh's mother was Sudha Ghosh.
