Asim Ghosh (Hindi: असीम घोष) was born on December 7, 1947. He used to be the president and CEO of Husky Energy. This is one of Canada's biggest energy companies. He retired in December 2016. Mr. Ghosh was also on Husky's board of directors until December 2020. That's when Husky joined with another company called Cenovus Energy Inc.

Mr. Ghosh has held many important leadership jobs. He worked in Canada, India, and Hong Kong. He worked for big companies like Carling O'Keefe (now part of Molson Coors), Pepsi Foods, and Hutchison Whampoa.

Education and Early Career

Asim Ghosh went to school at St. Columba's School, Delhi. He then studied Electrical Engineering. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi in 1969. In 1970, he earned his MBA degree. This was from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Ghosh started his career in 1971. He worked for Procter & Gamble in Canada. In 1980, he joined Rothmans International. He became a Senior Vice President at Carling O'Keefe. This company was one of Canada's largest breweries.

Building Businesses

In 1989, Mr. Ghosh helped start Pepsi Foods in India. He was a co-CEO and helped set up their food business there. In 1991, he moved to Hong Kong. His job was to create a new company. It was a partnership between Pepsi and Hutchison Whampoa. Soon after, from 1991 to 1998, he became the CEO of AS Watson Industries. This company was part of Hutchison Whampoa.

In 1998, Mr. Ghosh took on a big role in India. He led Hutchison Whampoa's mobile phone business. He was the Managing Director and CEO of Hutchison Essar Ltd. He worked there until March 2009. During his time, the company grew a lot. It started in just one city. It became India's second-largest mobile phone company. It had over 63 million customers.

In 2007, he oversaw a major sale. Hutchison Whampoa sold its part of the company to Vodafone. This deal was worth about $19 billion. It was a very big business deal in India at that time.

Leading Husky Energy

In June 2010, Mr. Ghosh became President and CEO of Husky Energy. He retired in December 2016. He stayed on Husky's Board of Directors until December 2020. That's when Husky merged with Cenovus. In April 2019, he joined the board of Hutchison Drei Austria. This is a telecommunications company. He also serves on the boards of seven companies in the UK.

While he was at Husky, the company finished two huge projects. These were the Liwan Gas Project in China and the Sunrise Energy Project in Canada. He also helped change how Husky produced heavy oil. They started using a new method called "thermal technology." This helped them produce much more oil. Production grew from about 18,000 barrels per day in 2010 to about 80,000 barrels per day by the end of 2016.

Other Important Roles

Mr. Ghosh has been a member of many important groups. He was on the board of the Business Council of Canada. He also chaired the National Telecom Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry. He was also chairman of the Cellular Operators Association of India. He is a respected former student of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He was also on the board of governors for the Banff Centre. And he was a director for the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation.

Family Life

Asim Ghosh is married to Sanjukta Ghosh. They have two sons. Asim Ghosh's father was Padma Shri Amalananda Ghosh. He was a famous Indian archaeologist. He was the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1953 to 1968. His mother was Sudha Ghosh.
