From Askersund, you can see amazing views of Lake Vättern and the Tiveden forest. Across the water, you can even spot Prince Gustaf's Castle, called Stjernsund.

A Look at Askersund's History

Askersund has a long history. Its beginnings can be traced back to the 14th century. This means it was around over 600 years ago!

Becoming a City

In 1643, Askersund became important enough to get its own charter. A charter is like a special document. It gave Askersund the rights of a city. Even though it's a small town today, it's still called a city because of this history. Today, a place usually needs more than 10,000 people to be called a city in Sweden.

Important Developments

In the 1800s, there were plans for Askersund. It was meant to be a supply base for Karlsborg Fortress. This fortress was on an island in Lake Vättern.

In 1813, something very special happened. The Askersunds flickskola was started in Askersund. This was only the second school in Sweden to offer higher education for girls. It was a big step forward for education!
