Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Españolas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Españolas (ANME) was an important group in Spain that worked for women's rights. It was active from 1918 to 1936.

ANME was not the first group in Spain to fight for women's rights, but it lasted longer than any of the ones before it. It was started in Madrid in 1918 by two women, Consuelo Gonzalez Ramos and Maria Espinosa de los Monteros. The main goal of ANME was to improve women's rights, especially the right for women to vote in elections, which is called women's suffrage.

This group did not get help from the Catholic church or any political parties. Instead, it relied on money and support from people who believed in their cause. Their meetings were often held at the homes of their leaders.

Working Together for Change

In 1919, ANME helped create a larger group called the Consejo Feminista de España. This was an umbrella organisation, which means it brought together several smaller women's groups. These included the Sociedad Progresiva Femenina and La Mujer del Porvenir from Barcelona, and the Sociedad Concepción Arenal and Liga para el Progreso de la Mujer from Valencia. By working together, these groups hoped to make a bigger impact.

Spreading Their Ideas

From 1921, ANME started publishing its own newspaper. It was called Mundo Femenino, which means "Women's World". This newspaper helped them share their ideas and goals with more people across Spain.

Trying for Political Power

In 1934, the ANME group decided to form its own political party. They called it the Acción Política Feminista Independiente. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas and want to get their members elected to make laws. This new party tried to join a "leftist coalition," which is a group of political parties that work together because they have similar goals, often focused on social equality and helping ordinary people. However, their attempt to join this coalition was not successful.

Both the political party and the ANME organization itself stopped existing during the Spanish Civil War. A civil war is a war fought between different groups of people within the same country.
