About Assis
Roberto de Assis Moreira was born on January 10, 1971, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. His mother, Miguelina de Assis, sold cosmetics and later became a nurse. His father, João Moreira, was a ship welder and used to be a professional player for Cruzeiro-RS. When Assis was growing up, his family lived in a simple wooden house in a neighborhood of Porto Alegre.
Assis grew up surrounded by football. His father was a former player and worked as a doorman for Gremio on game days. His uncles also played football. Assis was a big inspiration for his younger brother, Ronaldinho, who is nine years younger. Assis's talent helped him join Gremio's youth team and led to a successful sports career.
When Assis signed his first contract, Gremio paid for a new house for his family in a nicer neighborhood. This house had a swimming pool. Sadly, his father drowned in the pool in 1989. Assis found his father's body when he came home to celebrate his eighteenth birthday. After this sad event, Assis had to take on the role of head of the family. He managed his own career and later helped manage his brother's career too.
His Football Journey
When Assis was just 16, he was already showing great skill on Gremio's youth team. He caught the eye of Torino, an Italian team. Gremio quickly signed Assis to a professional contract. They offered his family a new house with a swimming pool as a bonus.
Assis quickly became well-known at Gremio. He helped his team win three state titles in a row from 1988 to 1990. Even with this success, Assis faced a challenge in 1991 when he had a serious knee injury. This kept him from playing for eight months. In 1992, Gremio sold Assis to a Swiss team called FC Sion. He played there until 1995 and won his first Swiss Cup in 1995.
After that, he was loaned to several teams. He helped Sporting CP win the Portuguese Super Cup in 1995. He returned to Sion in 1996 and stayed through the 1997 season. During this time, he helped his team win another cup and become Swiss Champions.
Later in his career, Assis played in different countries. He had stints in Portugal, Japan, and Mexico. He also returned to Brazil to play for some teams there. He finished his playing career with Montpellier HSC in France.
Manager and Agent Role
Assis's younger brother, Ronaldo, who became known as Ronaldinho, also showed amazing talent at Gremio's youth team. Assis had experience as a player and negotiator in football. He also took on a father-like role for his brother. Because of this, Assis became Ronaldinho's manager throughout his entire career.
Assis stayed in close contact with his brother while Ronaldinho played in Brazil. Gremio received many offers for Ronaldinho, but they turned them down. Assis then helped negotiate Ronaldinho's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Assis became known for his strong negotiation skills. He managed all of his brother's business and kept pressure on sponsors. Some people even said he controlled Ronaldinho's every move.
Assis was also very important in the deal with Nike. This deal meant his brother joined the group of athletes who wore the famous Nike Tiempo shoe line.
Other Work
While Assis was famous for being Ronaldinho's agent, he also helped other players. He served the interests of several other athletes, including Rodrigo Gral. Assis was the president of a group called the Assis Moreira Group.
Assis also owns a Brazilian football club called Porto Alegre. This club currently plays in the Campeonato Gaúcho league.
Personal Life
His Bond with Ronaldinho
Today, Assis continues to be his brother's agent and adviser. Many people, including Ronaldinho himself, say that Assis has been a huge influence and guide for his brother. Some observers have even called Assis an idol to his younger brother. In January 2020, Ronaldinho described his brother as a "brother, father, partner, [and] footballer."
When Ronaldinho received the FIFA World Player of the Year award for the second time in December 2005, he gave a special tribute to his brother. He said, "He's my idol. He's been through a lot and has helped me every step of the way. He has encouraged me never to stop trying."
His Son
Assis also has a son, Diego Assis. His son also tried to become a football player, just like Assis and his uncle. Diego Assis joined Flamengo's youth team when Ronaldinho was playing for the main team. Diego left Flamengo at the same time as his uncle. Assis's son later joined Cruzeiro-RS for a short time in 2014, which was the same club his grandfather (Assis's father) had played for.
