María Asunción Rodés Serna (born September 16, 1957), known to many as Assumpta Serna, is a talented Spanish actress and writer. She was born in Barcelona, Spain. Assumpta has acted in movies and TV shows in 20 different countries and speaks six languages! She has also won over 20 international awards for her work.

About Assumpta Serna
Assumpta Serna was born in Barcelona, Spain. She first studied law until she was 19 years old. After that, she decided she wanted to be an actor. She then joined the Barcelona's School of Dramatic Arts to learn acting.
In 1994, Assumpta married Scott Cleverdon. He was her co-star in the TV show Sharpe's Company.
Her Acting Career
Assumpta Serna has had a long and successful career as an actress. She has often felt that her acting was more recognized and used well outside of Spain. She has worked in many different countries.
Movies Assumpta Serna Has Been In
Assumpta Serna is well-known for her main role in the movie I, the Worst of All (1990). In this film, she played Sor Juana, a famous Mexican poet, philosopher, and early supporter of women's rights.
She also acted alongside Antonio Banderas in Matador (1986). This was one of the first movies directed by the famous Pedro Almodóvar. Assumpta has appeared in many other films, including:

TV Shows Assumpta Serna Has Been In
On television, Assumpta Serna is famous for playing a Spanish guerrilla fighter in the first four parts of the ITV's Sharpe series. These shows were based on novels by Bernard Cornwell.
She also played Anna Cellini in Falcon Crest and Catherine of Aragon in Henry VIII. She acted in the popular Spanish TV series Aquí no hay quien viva. From 2011 to 2014, Assumpta played Vannozza dei Cattanei in the historical drama Borgia. Vannozza was the mistress of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia.
Assumpta also helped produce a documentary called Fresco Fiasco. She also acted in the movie Behold the Monkey. Both films are about the famous restoration of the Ecce Homo painting. These projects were shown on the Sky Arts network in the UK in 2016.

Assumpta has written two books about acting techniques:
- Screen acting or El trabajo del actor de cine (1999): This was the first book written in Spanish about how to act for films.
- Monologues in V.O. (2001): This book is a helpful resource for actors preparing for auditions.
Teaching and Workshops
Assumpta Serna currently teaches courses on communication and leadership in both English and Spanish. She and her husband, Scott Cleverdon, created the first university Master's course for actors focused on "Screenacting" (acting for the screen).
They also teach courses called "Directing Actors" and "The Script and the Actor" around the world. They work with over 70 international organizations and workshops.
Fundación First Team
Assumpta and Scott formed a group called Fundación First Team. Since 2000, they have taught 4,000 students in 6 countries. They work with different film schools and film festivals. Their workshops always include people with disabilities and those who are less privileged.
Through Fundación First Team, Assumpta has also published a book called First Female directors of Spanish movies, written by Conchita Martínez Tejedor.
Leadership Roles
Assumpta Serna was the President of AISGE (Actores e Intérpretes – Sociedad de Gestión de España). This is Spain's organization that manages intellectual property rights for actors.
She has also volunteered for many other organizations. For example, she helped select foreign movies for the Oscars for four years as part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). She was also a board member of the European Film Academy (EFA) for eight years. She even helped raise 1.8 million euros to bring the European film awards to Catalunya in 2004.
La Familia de Cine
During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, Assumpta and her husband Scott Cleverdon started doing a daily livestream. They talked about actors, acting, and all parts of the film industry from an actor's point of view. They created a community with their followers called "La Familia de Cine" (The Film Family).
They have interviewed many famous filmmakers, such as Rodrigo Cortés, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, and Phillip Noyce. They are currently working on a three-volume book about film acting.
