Vannozza's Early Life
Vannozza was born in 1442, probably in a city called Mantua in Italy. Later, she moved to Rome. In Rome, she managed several inns, which were like hotels or guesthouses. These inns were first in the Borgo area and then in Campo de' Fiori.
Family Life with Rodrigo Borgia
Vannozza's close relationship with Cardinal Rodrigo de Borgia began sometime between 1466 and 1472. Rodrigo Borgia later became Pope Alexander VI.
Vannozza had four children with Rodrigo Borgia, and he openly recognized them as his own:
- Cesare (1475–1507)
- Giovanni (1476–1497), who became the 2nd Duke of Gandia
- Lucrezia (1480–1519)
- Goffredo (born 1481 or 1482; died 1518)
Vannozza was married three times. Her first husband was Domenico d'Arignano, who worked for the Church. He passed away before her son Giovanni was born. In 1480, Rodrigo Borgia arranged for Vannozza to marry Giorgio di Croce. Giorgio was given a job as a secretary for the Church. During her marriage to Giorgio, Vannozza had another son named Ottavio, who did not live long. After Giorgio died in 1486, Vannozza married Carlo Canale.
Later Years and Legacy
After Rodrigo Borgia became the Pope, Vannozza lived a more private life. However, Pope Alexander VI's love for his children with Vannozza remained very strong. He spent a lot of money on them and gave them many honors. Vannozza also remained an important figure in the Borgia family and had influence during Rodrigo Borgia's time as Pope.
Vannozza passed away in 1518. She was buried with special honors in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. The Pope at the time, Pope Leo X, recognized her importance by having the papal court attend her funeral.
