Asterivora combinatana is a special type of moth that belongs to the Choreutidae family. It is found only in New Zealand, which means it is endemic to that country.

Meet the Asterivora combinatana Moth

Adult Asterivora combinatana moths have been seen flying from October to April. These moths are active during the day, which is a bit unusual since many moths fly at night.

The Life of a Young Moth

The young moths, called larvae, feed on a plant known as Senecio bellidioides. They create a silky tunnel, or "gallery," among the plant's new shoots, where they live and eat.

The larvae are a bit thick and get slightly narrower at both ends. Their head and the top part of their body (called the prothorax) are hard and light brown. The rest of their body is a yellowish-brown color.

When it's time to change into an adult moth, the larvae form white, silky cocoons. They usually do this among the dead parts of the plant they live on. This process is called pupation.
