The Brewer's milkvetch (scientific name: Astragalus breweri) is a type of milkvetch plant. It is a special plant because it grows naturally only in a specific area. This plant is found only in northern California, especially around the northern part of the San Francisco Bay Area.

You can find Brewer's milkvetch growing in open areas within the North Coast Ranges. Sometimes, it even grows in a special type of ground called serpentine soil. This soil has unique minerals that only certain plants can grow in.

What Does Brewer's Milkvetch Look Like?

Brewer's milkvetch is a small plant that lives for only one year. Its stems are usually just a few centimeters long.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of this plant are small. They have leaflets that are spaced far apart. The tips of these leaflets often have a small notch.

The flowers grow on a stem called a peduncle. This stem has rough hairs on it. Each group of flowers can have up to ten pea-like blooms. Each flower is about one centimeter long. They can be white, yellow, or a light lavender color. Sometimes, they have light purple stripes.

Fruit and Seeds

After the flowers, the plant produces a fruit. This fruit is an oval-shaped pod, which is a type of legume. The pod is about one centimeter long. It has a sharp, pointed tip that looks like a beak. Inside the pod, there are 2 to 6 seeds. These seeds look like small beans.
