Scientific classification

The Nganha night frog (scientific name: Astylosternus nganhanus) is a special type of frog. It belongs to the family Arthroleptidae. This frog lives only in Cameroon, a country in Africa. It is found on Mount Nganha, which is part of the Adamawa Plateau. Scientists think it probably lives only in that area. This rare frog is not well known, as only five of them have ever been found.

What Does the Nganha Night Frog Look Like?

Adult Nganha night frogs are about 45 millimeters (1.8 inches) long. This measurement is from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom). Their head is very narrow and flat. It is also shaped like a triangle.

The frog's eyes are quite small. They do not stick out very much from its head. Its fingers are fairly short and slender. The back legs are also short. The tips of its toes do not have wide, sticky pads like some other frogs.

The skin of the Nganha night frog is smooth. It has some thin wrinkles, especially on its sides. The frog's color is dark. It has black patterns all over its body. The tops of its arms and forearms have large, raised black bumps. Its thighs have only a few marks. Dark coloring is also found under its throat and on its belly.

Where Does the Nganha Night Frog Live?

The Nganha night frog lives near water. You can find it along streams and rivers. It lives in narrow forest areas called "gallery forests." It also lives in wet, grassy areas nearby. These places are high up, between 1,400 and 1,700 meters (4,600 to 5,600 feet) above sea level.

Scientists have found tadpoles that might belong to this species. They were found in rock pools within the streams.

Why is This Frog in Danger?

The Nganha night frog is known from only one group of frogs. This means it is likely in great danger. Its home is being lost because of human activities. Farmers are clearing land for small farms. People are also cutting down trees for wood.

This frog does not live in any protected areas. This makes it even more vulnerable to losing its habitat.
