The Astylus trifasciatus is a fascinating type of beetle that lives in Chile. People in Chile often call it the "pololo común," which means "common beetle."
These beetles are quite small, usually about 1.5 centimeters long. That's about the length of your fingernail! They have bright orange wing covers, called elytra. These elytra are special because they have a cool pattern. There's one black stripe right down the middle of the beetle's back. Then, there are two more black stripes that go across each wing cover. This makes them easy to spot!
Astylus trifasciatus beetles enjoy eating from flowering plants. They are known to collect pollen from different flowers. One of their favorite flowers is a type of orchid called Bipinnula fimbriata. They help these plants by moving pollen from one flower to another, which helps the plants make seeds.
