History of Athol
Athol was founded a long time ago, in 1888. That same year, the town got its first post office, which was important for sending and receiving mail.
Athol was once a busy stop for trains on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. It was a place where goods were shipped and received.
A very famous American song, "Home on the Range," was written near Athol. Dr. Brewster Higley wrote the song in a cabin about 8 miles north of the city in the 1870s.
