According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²). 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (2.12%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,370 people, 3,409 households, and 2,185 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 389.4/km² (1,008.1/mi²). There were 3,675 housing units at an average density of 171.0/km² (442.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.01% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.19% of the population.
There were 3,409 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
