History of Atkinson
The area was named after Judge Atkinson, who owned land there. People started to settle in Atkinson in 1804. It officially became a town on February 12, 1819.
Over time, the people of Atkinson decided they wanted to "deorganize." This means they voted to stop being an official town with its own local government. The state government of Maine approved this change in 2018. The residents confirmed their choice with another vote in November 2018. Atkinson officially deorganized on July 1, 2019.
