Creating the Language
The Atlantean language was designed by a smart person named Marc Okrand. He is a linguist, which means he studies languages. Disney hired him to create a unique language just for the movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Marc Okrand's Work
Marc Okrand is famous for making other languages too. He also created the Klingon language for the Star Trek movies and TV shows. His job was to make the Atlantean language sound old and mysterious.
Inspiration and Design
When Marc Okrand created Atlantean, he looked at many real ancient languages. He took ideas from languages like Latin, Ancient Greek, and Sanskrit. He wanted the Atlantean language to sound like it had been spoken for thousands of years.
The language has a special way of putting words together. It uses a Subject–object–verb order. This means the sentence structure is often "who does what to whom," like "I the ball kick." This is different from English, which usually uses "Subject-Verb-Object" (like "I kick the ball").
Writing System
The Atlantean language also has its own unique writing system. It is not like the alphabet we use every day.
The Atlantean Alphabet
The Atlantean alphabet looks like ancient symbols. It is based on old scripts from real history. The letters are often written vertically, from top to bottom. Then, you read from left to right, like columns. This makes the writing look very special and unique to Atlantis.
How it Sounds
In the movie, the Atlantean characters speak this language. It sounds grand and powerful, just like you might imagine an ancient, lost civilization would speak. The sounds and words help to tell the story of Atlantis.
