Solidago tarda, also known as the Atlantic goldenrod, is a special and somewhat rare wild plant. It's a type of goldenrod, which belongs to the big sunflower family. You can find it growing along the Atlantic coast, from New Jersey all the way down to Alabama. Even though it covers a wide area, it's not very common to see it in large numbers.

What is Atlantic Goldenrod Like?

The Atlantic goldenrod is a plant that lives for many years. We call plants like this "perennial herbs." It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 180 centimeters (about 6 feet) high! That's taller than most kids your age.

This plant has special parts underground. It has a branching caudex (a woody base) or rhizomes (underground stems). These parts help the plant store energy and grow back year after year.

Its leaves are shaped like an ellipse or an egg. The leaves near the bottom of the plant can be very long, up to 35 centimeters (about 14 inches). Leaves higher up on the stem are usually shorter.

When it blooms, one Atlantic goldenrod plant can make up to 50 small, bright yellow flowers. These flowers grow in a long, narrow cluster at the very top of the plant. They look like tiny bursts of sunshine!
