Atsushi Shirai's Football Journey
Atsushi Shirai was born in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on April 18, 1966. After finishing his studies at Kyoto Sangyo University, he began his professional football career.
Early Career and First Teams
In 1989, Shirai joined Tanabe Pharmaceutical. He quickly became their main goalkeeper. In 1991, he moved to Toshiba, which later became Consadole Sapporo. He played many games there until 1992. However, in 1993, he didn't get to play any matches.
Moving to New Clubs
In 1994, Shirai joined Gamba Osaka. It was tough for him to get playing time there because other strong goalkeepers were ahead of him. In 1996, he returned to Consadole Sapporo and once again became their regular goalkeeper.
In 1997, he moved to JEF United Ichihara. Here, he competed for the starting spot with Japan's national team goalkeeper, Kenichi Shimokawa. Shirai played many matches in 1997, but in 1998, he didn't play as much.
Later Career and Retirement
In 1999, Shirai joined Omiya Ardija. He was the main goalkeeper for three seasons. He decided to retire at the end of the 2001 season. However, he made a brief comeback in March 2002. This was because several other goalkeepers on his team were injured. He didn't play any matches during this short return and retired for good in August 2002.
