Kenji Honnami, born on June 23, 1964, is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was a talented goalkeeper who played for several clubs in Japan. He also represented the Japan national team during his career.

Playing Career: Kenji Honnami's Club Journey

Kenji Honnami was born in Hirakata, Osaka. After finishing college at Osaka University of Commerce, he joined a football club called Matsushita Electric in 1986. This club later became known as Gamba Osaka.

Early Success with Gamba Osaka

With Matsushita Electric, Honnami helped his team win the 1990 Emperor's Cup, which is a big football tournament in Japan. In 1992, the old Japan Soccer League changed and a new league called the J1 League was created. Honnami became the main goalkeeper for Gamba Osaka. However, after 1996, he started to play less often.

Moving to Tokyo Verdy

In the middle of the 1997 season, Honnami moved to another team called Verdy Kawasaki, which later became Tokyo Verdy. At first, he was a backup goalkeeper. But by 1999, he became the regular goalkeeper for Tokyo Verdy. He played for the team until the end of the 2001 season, when he retired from playing professional football. Throughout his club career, Kenji Honnami played a total of 267 games.

International Career: Playing for Japan

Kenji Honnami also had the honor of playing for his country. He made his first appearance for the Japan national team on May 29, 1994, in a game against France. In total, he played 3 games for Japan in 1994.

Coaching Career: Leading a Team

After retiring as a player, Kenji Honnami continued to be involved in football. In August 2012, he became the manager for a women's football club called Speranza FC Osaka-Takatsuki. This team later changed its name to Konomiya Speranza Osaka-Takatsuki. He coached the team until the end of the 2016 season.
