Kenichi Shimokawa's Football Journey
Kenichi Shimokawa was born in Gifu, Japan, on May 14, 1970. After finishing high school, he began his professional football career in 1989. He joined a team called Furukawa Electric, which later became known as JEF United Ichihara.
Playing for JEF United Ichihara
Shimokawa quickly became the main goalkeeper for JEF United Ichihara. He played in this important role for more than 10 seasons! He was a very consistent player for the team.
However, around the year 2000, another talented goalkeeper named Ryo Kushino started playing more. This meant Shimokawa had fewer chances to be on the field.
Moving to Yokohama F. Marinos
In 2001, Shimokawa decided to move to a new team, Yokohama F. Marinos. Even though he was a skilled player, he didn't get many chances to play in matches there.
His most memorable game for Yokohama F. Marinos in the J1 League happened in 2003. He played in the very last game of the season. He had to step in because the regular goalkeeper, Tetsuya Enomoto, received a red card early in the match. Yokohama F. Marinos won that game and became the J1 League champions that season!
Shimokawa retired from playing professional football at the end of the 2006 season.
Playing for Japan's National Team
Kenichi Shimokawa also had the honor of playing for the Japan national team. His first game for Japan was on June 10, 1995, against Sweden.
He was an important part of the national team and played in every match during the 1996 Asian Cup. Overall, he played 9 games for Japan between 1995 and 1997.
