Playing for Clubs
Kenichi Shimokawa started his football journey after finishing high school. In 1989, he joined a team called Furukawa Electric. This team later became known as JEF United Ichihara.
Right from his first year, Kenichi became the main goalkeeper for the team. He played in almost every game for over 10 seasons! This shows how important he was to the team.
In 2000, his chances to play became less. Another talented goalkeeper, Ryo Kushino, started playing more often. Because of this, Kenichi decided to move to a new team.
Moving to Yokohama F. Marinos
In 2001, Kenichi joined Yokohama F. Marinos. Even though he was a great player, he didn't get many chances to play in matches for this new team.
He only played one game in the J1 League for Yokohama F. Marinos. This happened in the very last game of the 2003 season. In that match, the main goalkeeper, Tetsuya Enomoto, received a red card early in the game. This meant Kenichi had to step in and play!
Marinos won that important match. Because of their win, they became the J1 League champions for that season. Kenichi retired from playing football at the end of the 2006 season.
Representing Japan
Kenichi Shimokawa also had the honor of playing for his country. On June 10, 1995, he played his first game for the Japan national team against Sweden.
He was a key player for Japan in the 1996 Asian Cup. He played in every single match during that tournament. In total, he played 9 games for Japan between 1995 and 1997.
