Ryo Kushino (櫛野 亮, Kushino Ryo, born March 3, 1979) is a former football player from Japan. He played as a goalkeeper, the player who defends the team's goal.

Football Career

Ryo Kushino was born in Kumamoto, Japan, on March 3, 1979. After finishing high school, he started his professional football career in 1997. He joined the J1 League team JEF United Ichihara, which later changed its name to JEF United Chiba.

Early Years at JEF United

For his first three years, Kushino didn't get to play in any games. The team's main goalkeeper was Kenichi Shimokawa, who also played for the Japanese national team.

In 2000, Kushino finally got his chance and became the team's regular goalkeeper. He played well for several years. However, in August 2005, he got injured. This meant he lost his spot to another goalkeeper, Tomonori Tateishi.

Even though he wasn't playing in many league games, Kushino was a key player in the J.League Cup. He helped his team win the championship in both 2005 and 2006.

Loan to Nagoya and Return

In 2007, Kushino went to play for another team, Nagoya Grampus Eight, on a temporary deal called a loan. But he didn't play much there either, because the team's main goalkeeper was Seigo Narazaki, another player for Japan's national team.

He returned to JEF United in 2008. By this time, a younger goalkeeper named Masahiro Okamoto had become the first choice. In 2010, the team was moved down to the J2 League, a lower division. Kushino played as the regular goalkeeper for much of that year, but he played very little in 2011.

Kushino officially retired from playing football at the end of the 2013 season.
