Attaboy Sam! is a fun children's book written by Lois Lowry. It came out in 1992. This book is the second one in a popular series about a girl named Anastasia and her younger brother, Sam. Many kids love Sam because he's always getting into funny situations.

The Sam Krupnik Series

Lois Lowry wrote several books about Sam and his family. Here are the books in the series:

  • All About Sam (1988) – This book introduces Sam as a mischievous little boy.
  • Attaboy Sam! (1992) – This is the book we are talking about!
  • See You Around, Sam! (1996) – In this story, Sam wants fangs. He even thinks about running away to Alaska to find some.
  • Zooman Sam (1999) – Sam dreams of becoming a zookeeper. He tries to achieve this by teaching his schoolmates about animals.

What is Attaboy Sam! About?

The story of Attaboy Sam! starts with a big mystery. Why won't Sam Krupnik let his mom into his bedroom? Why has he started calling his toy box "The Lab"? And why does he always carry a special Ziplock bag in his pocket? What is he hiding?

It turns out that Sam's mom's birthday is coming soon. She told her family that she really wanted homemade gifts this year. Sam decides to create a very special, secret perfume just for her. This perfume will mix all of her favorite smells together. But how do you put all those different, quirky scents into one bottle?

If anyone can figure out a way, or at least have a lot of fun trying, it's Sam. He is Anastasia's clever and imaginative younger brother. The book follows his hilarious attempts to make the perfect birthday gift.

Why Lois Lowry Wrote About Sam

Lois Lowry shared why she decided to write books just for Sam. She said that Sam first appeared in the books about his older sister, Anastasia. Sam was born when Anastasia was ten years old. For a long time, he was only a character in her stories.

But kids really liked Sam. Maybe he reminded them of their own younger brothers. Because young readers asked for more stories about him, Lois Lowry decided to give Sam his very own book series.

Book Review

Critics loved Attaboy Sam!. Kirkus Reviews called it "Warm, lively, true to children's real inner lives, and laugh-aloud funny all the way." The book was also named one of the School Library Journal Best Books of the Year.
