Atuntaqui is a city in the northern part of Ecuador. It is located in the Imbabura Province. About 25,115 people live there.
The city sits high up, at about 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) above sea level. It is only 13 kilometers (8 miles) north of a bigger city called Ibarra. You can reach Atuntaqui by following the Panamerican Highway.
Even though the area is officially named Antonio Ante, many people know it as Atuntaqui. This name has a long history. Some say it means 'big drum'. Others believe it means 'land rich in truth' or 'big barn'. It might also mean 'place of the inn' or 'tightly closed town'.

Atuntaqui's Climate and Weather
Atuntaqui has a mild and dry climate. The average temperature throughout the year is about 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit). This makes it a pleasant place to visit.
History and Economy of Atuntaqui
On August 13, 1868, a big earthquake caused some damage to Atuntaqui. After the earthquake, the city was rebuilt. It then grew and developed, becoming an important center.
One big step was the creation of a textile factory. This factory even built its own power plant using the Ambi river. Later, the railway arrived in Andrade Marín, a town close to Atuntaqui. This helped the city connect with other places.
Since the year 2000, Atuntaqui has become very famous for its textiles and crafts. People come from all over to buy clothes and handmade items.
The Atuntaqui Expo
Every year, during the Carnival holidays, Atuntaqui hosts a special event called the Atuntaqui Expo. This expo brings in many visitors. For example, in 2009, about 140,000 people came to the city just to shop and enjoy the expo. It's a great time for the local economy.
