Aua is a small island located in the Bismarck Archipelago. It is part of the Western Islands region and the Manus Province in northern Papua New Guinea.
Discovering Aua Island
The first time Europeans saw Aua Island was on July 27, 1545. A Spanish explorer named Iñigo Órtiz de Retes was sailing on his ship, the San Juan. He was trying to get back to New Spain (which is now Mexico) from Tidore.
Mapping the Islands
During his journey, Iñigo Órtiz de Retes mapped Aua Island. He also charted the nearby islands of Wuvulu and Manu. He gave these islands a special name: La Barbada. This means "the bearded island" in Spanish.
