What is the Auburn Button Works and Logan Silk Mills?
This historic building is made of brick and sits on a strong stone foundation. It has three main parts. There is a tall, three-story main section.
On one side, there is a two-story west wing. On the other side, there is a three-story east wing. Together, these sections formed a large industrial complex.
The Famous Silk and Other Businesses
The Logan Silk Mills became quite famous for a special reason. They made the silk for a dress worn by Caroline Harrison. She was the First Lady, meaning the wife of the President.
Mrs. Harrison wore this silk gown in 1889. This was when her husband, Benjamin Harrison, became the 23rd President of the United States.
However, the Logan Silk Mills closed down the very next year. After that, the Wegman Piano Company moved into that part of the building. The Auburn Button Works stayed in the complex for a bit longer, until around 1900.
In 1914, a fire damaged the west wing of the building. It destroyed the third floor of that section. Over the years, the complex was used for many different things. It made car parts, mill supplies, shoes, and boat hardware. It also served as a warehouse for storing goods.
Why is This Building Important?
The Auburn Button Works and Logan Silk Mills building is important because of its history. It shows what factories were like in the late 1800s. It also tells a story about the types of businesses that operated in Auburn.
Because of its historical value, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
