Auch Cathedral (also known as Basilique Cathédrale Sainte-Marie d'Auch) is a large Roman Catholic church located in the town of Auch in France. It is a very important building, considered a national monument. It is also the main church for the Archbishopric of Auch, which means it's where the Archbishop, a high-ranking Catholic leader, has his official seat.
For a short time, the church's special religious status was changed, but it was given back in 1822. In 1928, the cathedral received the special title of a "minor basilica" from the Pope. This title is given to churches that are very important for religious reasons.
Discover Auch Cathedral
Auch Cathedral is a stunning example of old architecture. Its construction began in 1489 and took a very long time to finish, finally being completed in 1680. This means it took 191 years to build! The cathedral shows off two main styles of architecture: Gothic and Renaissance. Gothic style often features tall, pointed arches and large windows, while Renaissance style brings back ideas from ancient Roman and Greek art.
Amazing Stained Glass Windows
One of the most famous parts of Auch Cathedral is its collection of 18 beautiful stained glass windows. These windows were created by an artist named Arnaud de Moles during the Renaissance period. Stained glass windows are made from many pieces of colored glass joined together to form pictures. These windows tell stories from the Bible and fill the cathedral with colorful light. Looking at them is like looking at giant, glowing paintings.
