Auchenbreck Castle (also spelled Auchinbreck) was an old castle in Scotland. It was located on the Cowal peninsula, in a place called Argyll and Bute. You can find its remains in Kilmodan parish, close to the mouth of Glendaruel. This is about 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of Tighnabruaich. Not much is left of the castle today. All that remains is a flat, rectangular area, about 35 by 18 metres (115 by 59 ft). This area is between Auchenbreck farmhouse and a small stream called Auchenbreck Burn. Part of it is surrounded by a wall up to 2.2 metres (7 ft 3 in) high.

History of Auchenbreck Castle

The Campbell Family and the Castle

Auchenbreck Castle belonged to a powerful family called the Campbells of Auchinbreck. They were a special part of the larger Clan Campbell. Their family line started with Duncan, who was a younger son of Duncan Campbell, 1st Lord Campbell. In 1435, Duncan was given land near Dunoon. He also received more land in a place called Glassary. By the 1500s, this part of the Campbell family became known as "of Auchinbreck."

Life and Changes at the Castle

The castle was important enough to appear on an old map from the late 1500s. This map was made by a person named Timothy Pont. Sadly, in 1641, Dugald Campbell of Auchenbreck died in a fire at the castle.

Around 1703, the castle was bought by John Fullarton. He used to be a minister in Kilmodan and later became a Bishop of Edinburgh. Fullarton changed the name of the estate to Greenhall. He was the last person to live in the castle itself.

What Happened to the Castle?

After Fullarton passed away, the estate was sold in 1728. The sale included a large house. This house might have been built using stones taken from the old castle. By 1870, Auchenbreck Castle was already in the ruined state we see today.
