About the Museum
The museum is at 600 Interstate 30 East. It was created to share the history of the area. In the early 1900s, cotton was the biggest "cash crop" in Hunt County. This means it was the most important crop grown to sell for money. The museum has a special exhibit called "History of Cotton" that shows how important cotton was.
Honoring Veterans and Audie Murphy
A big part of the museum is about military veterans. It especially focuses on Audie Murphy. Audie Murphy was born in Hunt County. He even worked in Greenville before he joined the military. He became a very famous war hero. He received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the U.S. military.
In 2004, the Hunt County War Memorial was built on the museum's grounds. This memorial honors all the soldiers from Hunt County who died in wars. It has a 10-foot (3-meter) bronze statue of Audie Murphy. A local artist from Greenville named Gordon Thomas made this statue.
Around the monument, there are granite stones. These stones have the names of the county's war dead carved into them. Other stones show famous quotes from Audie Murphy. They also include quotes from former U.S. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan.
Audie Murphy's Collection
In 2012, the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio gave its collection of Audie Murphy's items to the museum. These items are now a permanent part of the museum's collection. The museum also hosts an event called "Audie Murphy Days" every year. It usually happens in June.
