Private August Frederick Bronner (born 1835 – died October 31, 1893) was a brave soldier from Germany. He fought for the United States during the American Civil War. Bronner earned the highest award for courage in battle, the Medal of Honor. He received this special award for his actions during two important battles: the Battle of White Oak Swamp and the Battle of Malvern Hill, both in Virginia in 1862.
A Soldier's Life
August Frederick Bronner was born in Germany around 1835. He later moved to the United States. During the American Civil War, he joined the Union Army. He served as a Private in Battery C of the 1st Battalion, New York Volunteer Light Artillery. This unit used cannons to support the soldiers on the ground.
Earning the Medal of Honor
The Medal of Honor is the highest military award given by the United States. It is given to soldiers who show extreme bravery and risk their lives during combat. Private Bronner received this honor for his actions on June 30 and July 1, 1862.
He showed great courage during the Battle of White Oak Swamp and the Battle of Malvern Hill. These battles were part of a larger series of fights in Virginia. His bravery helped his unit during these tough times.
