Augusta Mary Monica Crichton-Stuart, also known as the Marchioness of Bute, was an important woman from a noble family. She was born on August 19, 1880, and passed away on May 16, 1947. Her father was Sir Henry Bellingham, a Baronet, and her mother was Lady Constance Noel.

Her Marriage and Family

On July 6, 1905, Augusta married John Crichton-Stuart, 4th Marquess of Bute. Their wedding took place at Castle Bellingham in County Louth, Ireland. After the ceremony, a celebration was held at Mount Stuart House in Scotland.

An interesting fact about their wedding is that a film company recorded the event. This was one of the first times a noble family had their private moments filmed. Both Augusta's father and her husband's father were followers of the Roman Catholic faith.

After her marriage, Augusta Bellingham became known as The Marchioness of Bute. Her new family name was Crichton-Stuart. She and her husband had seven children together:

  • Lady Mary Crichton-Stuart (born 1906 – died 1980); she married Edward Walker and had children.
  • Sir John Crichton-Stuart, 5th Marquess of Bute (born 1907 – died 1956); he married Lady Eileen Beatrice Forbes and had children.
  • Lady Jean Crichton-Stuart (born 1908 – died 1995); she married Lt.-Cmdr. Hon. James Bertie and had two sons. Her elder son, Fra' Andrew Bertie, later became a very important leader of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
  • Lord Robert Crichton-Stuart (born 1909 – died 1976); he married Lady Janet Egida Montgomerie and had children.
  • Lord David Crichton-Stuart (born 1911 – died 1970); he married Ursula Packe and had children.
  • Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart (born 1913 – died 1956); he married Jane von Bahr and had children.
  • Lord Rhidian Crichton-Stuart (born 1917 – died 1969); he married Selina van Wijk and had children.

Helping During the War

During the First World War, the Marchioness of Bute played an important role. She opened her family home, Mount Stuart House, to be used as a military hospital. She also trained as a nurse herself. She worked at the Scottish General Hospital at Stobhill, helping to care for injured soldiers.

Because of her dedication and service, she received a special award in 1918. She was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She also received other important awards, including the Dame of Grace, Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and the Médaille de la Reine Elisabeth from Belgium.

Later Life

Lord Bute, Augusta's husband, passed away on April 25, 1947, at the age of 65. Augusta, the Marchioness of Bute, died shortly after him on May 16, 1947, when she was 66 years old.
