Augustus Berkeley, 4th Earl of Berkeley (born February 18, 1715 – died January 9, 1755) was an important figure in British history. He was the son of James Berkeley, 3rd Earl of Berkeley, who was a Vice-Admiral in the navy, and Lady Louisa Lennox. Augustus Berkeley inherited his father's noble titles and served in the military and government.
Early Life and Military Career
Augustus Berkeley began his career in the military. In November 1734, he became an ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. This was an early rank for an officer in the army.
In August 1736, when his father passed away, Augustus inherited several important titles. He became the 4th Earl of Berkeley, the 12th Baron Berkeley, and the 4th Viscount Dursley. An Earl is a high-ranking noble title, similar to a count in other countries.
Public Service and Achievements
In 1737, Augustus Berkeley took on more important roles. He was made the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. This meant he was the King's main representative in that county. He also became the Constable of St. Briavel's Castle. He held both of these positions until he died.
Around the same time, he was promoted in the military to lieutenant-colonel in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards. This showed his continued dedication to his military service.
In June 1739, he received a special honor. He was made a knight of the Order of the Thistle. This is a very old and respected order of chivalry in Scotland.
Augustus Berkeley also supported important charities. In October 1739, the Foundling Hospital received its royal charter. This hospital was a charity that cared for abandoned children. Augustus Berkeley was one of its founding governors, helping to set up and guide this important organization.
