How Auke Mountain Got Its Name
Auke Mountain was named after the local Auke people. The Auke are a group of Tlingit who have lived in this area for a very long time.
The name "Auke Mountain" was first officially written down and published in 1912. This was done by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS is a science agency of the U.S. government. They study the Earth, its natural resources, and natural hazards.
The USGS collected information about the mountain's name between 1976 and 1981. They then added it to their Geographic Names Information System on March 31, 1981. This system is a database that keeps track of names and locations of places in the United States.
