Aussersihl is a busy district in the city of Zürich, Switzerland. It is officially known as District number 4. People sometimes call it Chreis Cheib. In the local Zürich German language, cheib means an animal. This name came about because, a long time ago, there were pits in this area where dead animals were buried. Aussersihl includes three parts: Werd, Langstrasse, and Hard.

Discovering Aussersihl's Past
The area of Aussersihl, along with what is now District 5, used to be known as the Sihlfeld. This was a large area of pastures and fields. It was located between the village of Wiedikon (now District 3) and the Limmat river.
How Aussersihl Became a Town
People started building in this area during the 1700s. On March 27, 1787, Aussersihl became its own separate community. It was no longer part of Wiedikon.
During the time of the Industrial Revolution, Aussersihl grew very quickly. Many factory workers moved there. At one point, Aussersihl had more people living in it than the city of Zürich itself!
Joining the City of Zürich
Because it grew so fast, the local government of Aussersihl struggled to manage everything. In 1893, Aussersihl joined the city of Zürich. Wiedikon also joined at the same time. They became known as Stadtkreis III.
Later, in 1913, this large area was split into the districts we know today: District 3, District 4 (Aussersihl), and District 5.
A Place of New Beginnings
Aussersihl has always been a place where many people from other countries came to live and work. This is especially true for the Langstrasse area.
In the winter of 1963, a special project began in Aussersihl. Pastor Ernst Sieber started his Sozialwerke Pfarrer Sieber (Social Works of Pastor Sieber) to help people without homes. This important organization is still based in Aussersihl today.
Amazing Discoveries: Ancient History in Aussersihl
In March 2017, something incredible was found during a building project. Workers at the Kern school complex in Aussersihl discovered a woman buried in a carved tree trunk. She had died around 200 B.C.
Archaeologists carefully studied the discovery. They found that the woman was about 40 years old when she passed away. It seemed she did not do much heavy physical work during her life.
Along with the woman, many interesting items were found. These included:
- A coat made from sheepskin
- A special belt chain
- A beautiful wool dress
- A scarf
- A pendant made of glass and amber beads
These findings help us learn more about how people lived in Aussersihl thousands of years ago!
