Claude Austin Trevor Schilsky (born October 7, 1897 – died January 22, 1978) was an Irish actor. He had a long and successful career. He appeared in many films and television shows.
Austin Trevor began his acting journey on stage. In 1926, he played a parson in a play called Escape. This play first opened in London's West End. He was the only actor from that show to move to New York City. There, he performed in the same play on Broadway a year later.
He made history as the first actor to play Agatha Christie's famous detective, Hercule Poirot, on screen. He starred as Poirot in three British films in the early 1930s. These films were Alibi (1931), Black Coffee (1931), and Lord Edgware Dies (1934). He once said he got the role because he could speak with a French accent. Later, in 1965, he appeared in another Poirot film, The Alphabet Murders.
During the 1960s, Austin Trevor mostly worked in television. He acted in popular series like The First Churchills. In that show, he played a character named Lord Halifax. He also appeared in an episode of the legal drama The Main Chance. He passed away in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.
