The Australasian slimwing (scientific name: Lathrecista asiatica festa) is a special type of dragonfly. It's a subspecies of the Lathrecista asiatica dragonfly. You can only find this amazing insect in Australia.
These dragonflies are medium-sized. Their wings can spread out about 60 to 85 millimeters wide. That's about the length of a credit card!
Where They Live
The Australasian slimwing lives along the coast of Australia. You can find them from the Northern Territory all the way to the southern border of Queensland. They also live a bit inland from the coast.
They usually hang out near water. This includes places like:
- Rivers
- Streams
- Swamps
- Lagoons
Sometimes, you might even spot them far away from water.
What They Look Like
The male Australasian slimwing is quite colorful.
- Its main body (called the thorax) is black and yellow.
- The upper parts of its body are brown.
- Its tail (called the abdomen) is a bright reddish-orange.
- The very tip of its tail is black.
The female looks a bit different, as you can see in the pictures.
